May 10th, 2008 marks the 500th birthday of the Sistine Chapel, one of the most renowned artworks of the High Renaissance.

In 1508, Michelangelo was commissioned by Pope Julius II to paint the ceiling of the Sistine Chapel. The contract was signed on 10th, May 1508.

The proposed theme was for twelve large figures of the Apostles, but Michelangelo changed the theme to a much more complex design which eventually consisted of three hundred figures and took four years to complete.

Michelangelo used bright colors and painted from a scaffold erected high above the floor. On the lowest part of the ceiling he painted the ancestors of Christ. Above this he alternated male and female prophets, with Jonah over the altar. On the highest section Michelangelo painted nine stories from the Book of Genesis.
