"Sgraffito "is the Italian word for "scratched". In art, sgraffito refers to a method where tinted plaster is covered with a layer of white plaster (or vice-versa). After the lower layer has been covered, the top layer is scratched with a design that is revealed by the lower layer. This technique was popular during the sixteenth century in Italy as an interior decoration.. Earlier in Italy, the technique was used with a gold layer underneath, that, when scratched with a design, revealed golden lights. The plural of "sgraffito" is graffiti, that, when used in a modern sense, has nothing to do with its root word.
