Originally derived from the Hebrew word for prophet, Les Nabis was a group of artists formed between about 1889 and 1899 in France. Bonnard, Vuillard, Mailloi and Denis were some of the French artists belonging to the group. All of the artists in the group were influenced by Gauguin's advice that artists should paint in colors that are flat and pure. Maurice Denis said that all objects were flat prior to being colored, no matter what type of objects the artist was portraying. These artists were drawn away from Impressionism, having their connections with Symbolism instead. Bonnard and Vuillard, the best painters in the group, eventually changed their style to a form of Impressionism called "Intimisme". |
