The term icon originally referred to a panel picture of Christ or a Saint, as compared to a wall painting. The work is derived from the Greek "ikon", which means image. The subject matter was very limited and the forms and shapes they took were prescribed early in the 6th or 7th centuries A.D. and remained unchanged for many years to come. |
