The French word for handling is "facture"; the Italian word is "Fattura". Handling is the term that is given to the artist's execution of the art work and is very personal to each artist. Composition, subject, drawing and color are traits that indicate a certain school or period of art; handling is the way that an artist uses the paint, pencil, clay or other types of medium. It is the characteristic that a forger tries to imitate. The way in which the artist handles shapes and planes is just as personal and unique as the signature of each artist. Finally, even the way in which an artist sees his own brushwork is unique to each artist.
