This small painting is, paradoxically, monumental in scale. In contrast to the lively animation of most of Homer’s paintings at this time, there is brooding stillness here. The figure of the mother seems carved of wood; sails are are up but there is no sign of a breeze to move them.

By the time Renoir painted this late Bather he had given up depicting the plump, rosy girls that had won him popularity and fame. The women of this period are massive and monumental, much like the classical Greek and Roman statues he admired. Their proportions are exaggerated. The small heads and long torsos and limbs relate them to those classic Venuses and also suggest that <a href="http://www.artrev.com/art/artists/artist.asp?aid...

(Continued on ArtRev.com - Browse Hundreds of Articles on ArtRev.com Fine Art Blog)
