Dorothy Fagan

Artist Dorothy Fagan creates original pastel paintings and limited edition prints at her studio near Chesapeake Bay in Mathews County, Virginia en plein air and in the luminist style. Her paintings are influenced by American Impressionists including Elliot Clark, George Innes and Martin J. Heade. Fagan paints the fleeting light and coastal marshes along the Chesapeake and the Low Country of the Carolinas. She also paints the rolling hills and mountain streams of the Appalachian Mountains. In both genres, she asks the viewer to share her intense feelings for the land by seeing it's subtle and sometimes startling colors. Soon after graduating from East Carolina University with a BFA in printmaking and painting, she became the first Virginian elected to The Pastel Society of America and the recipient of the Medal of Honor for Pastel by the Academic Artists' Association.

She credits her success to her painting mentor, Robert B. Mayo, former curator of the Valentine Museum and Gallery Mayo, Richmond, Virginia, with whom she studied American landscape painting for ten years.

Her paintings have been represented in some of the nation's most prestigious art exhibitions including The Pastel Society of America, The Pastel Society of Canada, The Salmagundi Club, The Virginia Museum of Fine Arts, The Contemporary Museum of Art, The National Arts Club, The Hermitage Museum, The Pastel Society of Kansas, The G.V.W. Museum of Art, The Copley Society, The American Artists Professional League and Knickerbocker Artists.

Dorothy's work can be found in the private collections of NY Times best-selling author David Baldacci and former special prosecutor Kenneth Starr, as well as public collections of the City University of New York, Emory University, Longwood College, General Electric, Coldwell Banker, AAA of Tidewater, Towers Perrin, First National Exchange Bank, International Paper, Monarch Bank, Colonial American National Bank, Roanoke Athletic Club, Towne Bank and Wintergreen Resort. Her work has been featured in two PBS specials and is included in over two hundred private collections in the U. S., England and Lebanon and Canada.
