Socorro Martínez, a vivacious Mexican painter, began her professional career in 1991. She defines her style as “Magical Realism”, where the Mexican folk and folk-like references expressed in vibrant colors and memorable images open up a world where we feel welcome, thoughtful and appreciative of what she has to say about her culture and nationality.
Socorro colors her paintings with a fresh and joyful ingenuity. Her creative works are a direct result of her spontaneous emotion. The artist, with her descriptive fervor for nature, transforms spaces in the highest degree, where women and little girls convey with fruits, flowers; round faces, thick lips and big brown eyes, which watch us in the middle of a party of brilliant colors.
Socorro’s paintings take us to the imaginative sensitivity of Mexican people; toys, clay jars, simplified forms of colonial architecture, flowers, fish, moons and suns, and an enormous variety of exotic fruits that accumulate in her compositions, become symbols of the poetic imagination of their creator.
Socorro has exhibited and delighted collectors in Mexico, the United States, Canada, Colombia, Argentina, Cuba, Spain, and China, including exhibitions at the Consulate General to Mexico in Hong Kong and the Pan-American Games in Canada in 1999.
"The mark of a mature artist is the ability to keep growing artistically, to know when change is necessary and when it is not. Socorro Martinez has reached this level – she looks forward as she changes and embraces new themes and ideas, yet she also holds on to those parts of the past that still resonate. She invites us into the artistic kaleidoscope of her world; the world of an artist with a personal signature and universal appeal."
