Claude Lazar

Claude Lazar arrived in Paris in 1957 following the nationalization of the Suez Canal . After high school, he studied at the Academie de la Grande Chaumiere . He then enrolled at the School of Crafts.

Enthused by the May 1968 protests against capitalism, consumerism and traditional institutions, values and order, he took an internship in theater at the Faculty of Vincennes. He participated with the "Collective Cinema Vincennes" in a symposium "A Cultural Revolutionary Front" organized by the Cahiers du Cinema. During the festival d'Avignon in 1973 he met a subversive group of artists with whom he participated in many events such as cultural fronts, denouncing Cavar , LIP, real estate development of the Maeght gallery, creating a workshop, popular screen printing workshops, Chile exhibition against the dictatorship, and so forth.

In 1974 , Claude Lazar joined the Young Painting Exhibition for which he became secretary- general from 1975 to 1977 and participated in the Anti Fascist Collective with Julio Le Parc, Gerard Fromanger , Matieu , DDP , Claude Yvel , Gérard Le Cloarec and Frederick Brandon among others.

In 1978, after the Boulevard Haussmann assassination of Claude Lazar’s friend Ezzedine Kalak, the representative of the Organization for the Liberation of Palestine, Lazar decided to give up militancy and joined the gallery Jean Pierre Lavignes. Lazar takes a cue from the political issues and national liberation struggles to defend a subjective figurative imagery, at the crossroads of Vermeer and Hopper. His subjects are urban borrowings with a touch of 1940s film noir and a dash of loneliness and nightlife.

In 1982 , Claude Lazar broke into the American art market with the assistance of Alain Matarasso of the Centre Gallery. Claude Lazar is represented in galleries across the United States and several prestigious galleries in Europe.
