Ellie Freudenstein

Ellie Freudenstein has a practical approach to her work. “No whining,” she tells herself, “just do it.” The pursuit of a routine, the regular application of her craft, is a key to her success. Her impressionistic oil and watercolor landscapes have evolved with the practice of putting brush to canvas every day. “Inspiration is out there,” she declares. “The simple process of getting started will help me find something exciting.”

Freudenstein’s interest in art was instilled at an early age. Her house was filled with classical music and the children focused on art books. Her high school in Santa Monica was, at the time, one of the few that had a full art department. Studying there under instructor Lucille Brown Green, Freudenstein won a National Scholastic Art Award. She moved on to UCLA, earning a B.A. with honors in Fine Arts. She studied there also as a graduate under the direction of artists William Brice, Jan Stussey and Rico Lebrun. After stints in teaching and advertising, motherhood became her career for two decades. Once her children left for college, however, “it’s been art all the way.”

When she isn’t exhibiting her work, Freudenstein likes to paint “en plein air” from her van, preferring to work from field studies rather than photographs. She often demonstrates her approach to painting in weekend workshops at her Santa Barbara studio.
